Aloha,

Sixteen weeks after the wildfire disaster on Maui, our staff continues to be busy supporting survivors.

The fires wreaked havoc on the lives of thousands of residents. Often, with disaster relief, once immediate needs like food and shelter are met, there is a lingering need for mental health care and sometimes substance use treatment.

Thanks to support from the Hawaii Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund, we can provide outreach and behavioral health support for fire-disaster survivors.

Many individuals and families are still struggling to find long-term accommodations and are experiencing additional stress and trauma. Staff provide resources, a listening ear, and counseling when needed. Some fire survivors have also come into our programs, where we can address their behavioral health needs and provide case management services, such as replacing identification or connecting with healthcare providers.

We understand this is work will go on for the foreseeable future, and we are committed to provide our expertise and services as long as necessary.

Agency Spotlight: Malama Family Recovery Center

Partner agency Malama Family Recovery Center provides services for a unique need: pregnant and parenting women struggling with substance use disorder. It is the only place on Maui where children can stay with their mothers while in treatment.

This approach helps heal the entire family while addressing the trauma that might be the root of any issues.

Tobey Galambos was once a client of Malama. Today, she works as a counselor, helping other women facing many of the challenges she once did.

“I get to work with people and see them transform their lives and be the person they want to be.” Watch Tobey tell her powerful story.

As the holiday season nears, I hope it finds you well and with those you love. If you can donate now, know your generosity will help heal our community.

Thank you for your support,
