As we head into the holiday season, we know that this can be a challenging time for many. Family stressors, economic challenges and a heightened overall anxiety, due to the pandemic and its effects, can make it difficult to get through every day. And, unfortunately, many turn to substance use during this time. For some, it becomes a significant problem in their lives.
We are here to help. Our partner agencies of Aloha House, Malama Family Recovery Center, and Maui Youth & Family Services serve 8,000 Maui residents each year. We meet our clients where they are, find solutions to best meet their needs, and support them on their road to recovery.
Agency Spotlight: Malama Family Recovery Center
At Malama Family Recovery Center, we serve a unique need: pregnant and parenting women struggling with substance use disorder. It is the only place on Maui where children can stay with their mothers while they are in treatment.
This approach lends itself to healing the entire family and working together to address any trauma.
One staff person who works specifically in the family strengthening and reunification area is Donna “Kupono” Rivera Lucero. I’m pleased to announce her promotion to Program Director.
Kupono has been with us since 2009, and during that time has worked as a counselor and most recently taken the lead in developing cultural initiatives that are in alignment with our community and our clients’ cultures. We look forward to her doing more great things in her new role.

Give Hope
Our SafeHouse residential program provides housing and support for teenagers who identify as female who have been the victim of crime. Most are not connected with family and have very little. Help us make their holidays special by purchasing something on their Amazon Wish List.
