What Do We Know About Substance Use Coercion?
Commonly seen in circumstances involving domestic and intimate partner violence, substance use coercion (forced drug abuse) is a tactic used by abusers to undermine the credibility of and maintain power and control over their victim.
Some Mechanisms of substance use coercion can include:
- Introduction to addictive substances
- Using substance use as a threat to silence the victim from contacting law enforcement
- Isolation from recovery resources
- Forced withdrawal
- Treatment Interference
- Pressure or force to use substances or to use more than intended
- Forced control of prescription medications
A survey conducted by the National Domestic Violence Hotline found that 43% of survey participants who were victims or survivors of domestic violence had experienced substance use coercion.
