Aloha,
As we near the one-year anniversary of the wildfire disasters, the needs in our community continue to shift.
We’re dedicated to meeting mental health and substance use disorder needs of Maui residents, and at the same time, one of the biggest needs is for housing.
While our organizations are not housing-focused, we do provide services for the unsheltered that can help them become stabilized, healthy and ready to live independently. Sober living Program homes provide safe, sober-supportive shelter for clients who have completed treatment.
Agency Spotlight: Aloha House
The Aloha House Sober Living Program provides affordable, safe, sober, supportive housing to graduates of our programs. Typically, participants are single adults. With the wildfire disaster creating additional needs around housing, we made an exception.
Nolan has participated in Aloha House’s residential treatment and drug court programs and currently receives outpatient care. Born and raised in West Maui, after the fires, he found he and his two sons were bouncing from one temporary home to the next. He asked our staff if it would be possible to get into the Sober Living Program and bring his boys with him.
While unprecedented, it was an important opportunity to keep this family together and continue to provide sober support for Nolan. Our team was able to make it work, and eventually, the boys’ mother was able to join them too.
One life at a time, one family at a time, we were able to make a difference.
