Aloha,
The recent fire disasters have exacerbated the low inventory of affordable housing available on Maui. This is especially challenging for those in high-risk, low-income groups.
While our organizations are not housing-focused, we do provide services for the unsheltered that can help them become stabilized, healthy, and ready to live independently. As we continue to focus on our core services of mental health and substance use treatment, we’re looking at ways that we can ease the housing burden for our community.
- Sober living program homes provide safe, sober-supportive shelter for clients who have completed treatment.
- Our therapeutic foster homes provide advance-level support and care for youth in the foster system.
- A new program at Maui Youth & Family Services will help one of the groups most at risk for becoming unsheltered — former foster youth.
Agency Spotlight: Maui Youth & Family Services
MYFS has several programs that support young adults exiting the foster care system. Without family support, advanced education or fiscal assets, they are particularly at risk for becoming unsheltered. This can lead to a myriad of health, wellness and victimization issues for them and their children.
To address this issue, MYFS has refurbished a house formerly used for office space to create a home for females aged 18-26. Built in 1920, the five bedroom house has been transformed to a comfortable, nurturing space. As of this writing, five young women and four children reside in the home.
We’re excited to welcome these young women and their children onto our campus and provide a safe, secure space for those who might otherwise be unsheltered. If you’d like to help, see our Amazon Wishlist.
