Toddler with baby at Malama Family Recovery Center

Aloha!

I’d like to thank those who gave during our year-end fundraising efforts. The donations we received during this time showed tremendous support for our work. We were honored to have 43% of donors increase their gifts from the previous year, and see 12% growth in NEW donors!

These contributions will ensure that we are able to continue to provide behavioral health services for those most in need. And those needs are growing.

National data shows that behavioral health needs of adolescents are at an all-time high, evidenced by a recent US Surgeon General advisory on the youth mental health crisis.

It stated “the pandemic added to the pre-existing challenges that America’s youth faced by disrupting the lives of children and adolescents… the pandemic’s negative impacts most heavily affected those who were vulnerable to begin with, such as youth with disabilities, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ youth, low-income youth, youth in rural areas, youth in immigrant households, youth involved with the child welfare or juvenile justice systems, and homeless youth.”

Many youth we serve fall within the ‘vulnerable’ category. Our staff at Maui Youth & Family Services has seen first-hand the complex needs of this population, and continues to work diligently to support them.

We know that prevention is a key part of our work, and intervention at early ages can hugely impact a youth, their families, and our entire community.

Agency Spotlight: Malama Family Recovery Center

Malama Family Recover Center assists women with children, providing services that help end the familial cycle of substance use.

The center provides caring, holistic substance abuse treatment to women and children so families can live safe, independent, and healthy lives. It is Maui’s only women-specific addiction and substance abuse treatment center and the only place on the island where young children and infants can live with their mothers while they get help in therapeutic and sober living environments.

This is very important in engaging women seeking treatment. Concern over the care of their child while they are in treatment can be a significant barrier to enrolling in a treatment program. At Malama, the children also benefit from a supportive, nurturing environment. Their mothers participate in parenting classes, work on developmental goals for each child, and receive referrals for outside support if a child needs additional assistance. In this way, we work to build stronger families, reduce relapse and end the cycle of substance use disorder.

As always, thank you for your support.

In the News

Kula resident Linda Vincent learned about the services provided at Mālama Family Recovery Center and went out of her way to make the holidays very special for the children there. She handcrafted dozens of holiday-themed pillowcases so each child could receive a personal pillowcase for the holiday. Read more in Maui Now. Many mahalos, Linda!

Client Success

“Since participating in Malama’s programs, my hope for the future is to continuously be the change I want to see, to be the positive example, as one less drug addict out there.”
