A Lifetime of Service
Under his leadership, MBHR grew from a struggling Aloha House to an umbrella organization overseeing three partner agencies – Aloha House, Malama Family Recovery Center, and Maui Youth & Family Services – with 200 employees serving nearly 8,000 clients annually.
Expanding Access and Bridging Gaps
Cunningham’s tenure was marked by a commitment to identifying and addressing gaps in behavioral health services on Maui. He spearheaded the mergers that formed MBHR, rebuilt outpatient programs, added detox and drug court services, created prevention education camps for youth, and expanded clean and sober housing options. His focus on increasing access to care left a lasting impact on the island’s mental health landscape.
Nicole Hokoana, the current Chief Operating Officer, has been appointed as the new CEO, taking over from Cunningham on July 1, 2023. Cunningham expressed optimism about the organization’s future under Hokoana’s leadership and the strong team he has helped assemble.
