The Hawaii Community Foundation recently announced the award of over $2 million to support mental health needs on Maui. Partner agency Malama Family Recovery Center was awarded $99,500 through this Maui Strong fund grant.

Mental Health Services

This grant award will allow staff from the agency to continue important outreach work in West Maui. This is an extension of the work done over the past year by the Pūlama nā ‘Ohana team, which provided resources immediately after the fires and through the next year. Staff facilitated talk-story groups and provided one-on-one conversations and counseling at hotels, parks, and events. The team’s consistent presence provided survivors with someone to listen and help as needed, and built trust within the community. Referrals and intake for support for substance use and mental health treatment were also offered.

Going forward, the team will continue to provide these services, along with monthly family days with fun, interactive keiki and family activities. These events are supported with the addition of on-site therapists and child care.
