April 3, 2016 — Local Pilates Instructor Gives Back

Pilates Class at Malama 1Since last summer, local entrepreneur and owner of Serious.Fun.Fitness, Tim McCallum, who runs his Pilates studio out of North Kihei, has been volunteering his time to provide free Pilates classes to women at Malama Family Recovery Center (Malama Na Makua A Keiki). The nonprofit is Maui’s only women-specific addiction treatment center. “I do this because I want to support these women as they work to achieve a healthy, integrated mind and spirit,” says McCallum. “At its root, my work is about helping people change their lives for the better, which is what Malama is all about.”

Each week he brings a variety of portable Pilates equipment to Malama to guide clients through an intense workout that includes resistance-based exercises and stretching. Four to five women typically join McCallum at a time, giving him an opportunity to provide helpful feedback and suggestions. As is typical of any Pilates session with McCallum, there is always some joking and playful banter to keepthings fun and relaxed.

Client Kawena Amadeo, who began participating in the classes as soon as she moved into Malama in December 2015, says she looks forward to the classes and that McCallum’s attitude and constant encouragement are what make her enjoy them. “When I was using drugs I couldn’t and didn’t trust anyone, but Tim is so friendly and never judgmental – I can actually open up and trust him,” says Amadeo. She also feels it is helping with her recovery. “I can focus on myself and work on blocking out negative thoughts and distractions. It helps with some of the coping skills I am learning in treatment.” Malama’s Clinical Director, Dr. Lisa Ponichtera, is grateful for this opportunity for clients. “We know that exercise is a valuable part of the recovery process and we are so thankful to Tim for volunteering his time to help our clients in such a generous way. He really has an impact on the lives of the women we serve and has become a part of our ohana.”

The class takes place in Malama’s Early Learning Center, where staff provides free childcare and parenting classes, as well as developmental screenings for clients’ children. Malama is the only place on Maui where young children can live with their mothers during the recovery process.
