Fall 2021 Newsletter

Happy diverse people together in the park

Aloha,

The 2021 Recovery Month theme, “Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community” is appropriate for our Maui community, as we celebrate our diversity and seek to develop deeper understanding, caring, and connection that nurtures recovery.

Mental health and substance use disorders affect all communities nationwide. With commitment and support, those impacted can embark on a journey of improved health and overall wellness. National Recovery Month in September helps spread the message that all people can and do recover every day. Your support helps make this a reality for thousands of individuals on Maui each year. Join us in celebrating great outcomes for clients by making a donation today.

Agency Spotlight: Maui Youth & Family Services

When schools moved to distance learning due to the pandemic, Maui Youth & Family Services staff were concerned about providing care for some of our most vulnerable population: adolescents in need of counseling or substance use disorder treatment. They doubled down on their efforts to reach students outside of school through online events, an eNewsletter, and telehealth platforms.

There will be lasting impacts from the pandemic, according to the MYFS School Based Counselor Heather Long, who has been reaching out to Baldwin High School students and homeless teens. She said that “kids felt disconnected from their community of support.” As youth return to school this year, the pandemic is still a cause for concern. Meet Board Member Lauri Calkins

Lauri Calkins, PhD., joined the board of directors for Maui Behavioral Health Resources, effective July 1, 2021, in an installation ceremony by Judge Peter Cahill at the organization’s administrative offices in Makawao.

Dr. Calkins is a clinical psychologist with the Veterans Administration in Maui. She says she looks forward to serving the community in this role, and “I’m a big advocate of the importance of people having access to mental health care. I hope to help further the organization’s efforts in this area.”

We’re very pleased to have Dr. Calkins join us on our board of directors. Her knowledge of behavioral health needs and our Maui community will be valuable assets for the work of the board.

At the installation ceremony, current board members William Oldham and Kelli Myers also renewed their commitments to continue as board members for another three-year term, and current officers agreed to lead the organization for the 2021-2022 fiscal year: Jerry Welch, president, Kelli Meyers, vice-president, Bonnie West-Baker, treasurer, and Karen Temple, secretary. We sincerely appreciate the efforts and dedication of our board members, who help us do this important work.

With warmest aloha,
