ʻIke Journeys

Maui Behavioral Health Resources invites homeschooling families and parents of preschool-aged children to join ʻIke Journeys, a hands-on learning co-op rooted in the Hawaiian value “Ma ka Hana ka ‘Ike — Knowledge is Gained by Doing.”

ʻIke Journeys provides keiki with opportunities to explore, create, and grow through experiential learning that weaves Native Hawaiian culture and values into everyday education. Parents and children (all ages and stages) will come together in a supportive, community-based environment that nurtures curiosity, cultural identity, and family connection.

Every Monday and Wednesday from 9:00AM-12:00PM at Hanakaʻōʻō Beach, also known as Canoe Beach.

Core Curriculum:

Mental Health & Wellbeing

• Mindfulness practices (oli, breathing, grounding in nature) KILO journal
• Journaling, storytelling, art as emotional expression
• Group check-ins (pule or intention setting)
• Movement (hula, yoga, stretching, lomilomi basics)
• Include teaching practices from Malama Na Keiki

‘Āina-Based Learning

• Gardening, farming, and food sovereignty practices
• Learning native plants, medicinal uses, and gathering protocols
• Water care (streams, loko i‘a, ocean stewardship)
• Seasonal cycles and kilo (observations of moon, winds, tides, weather)

Culture & Identity

• Language lessons (‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i basics, proverbs, place names)
• Mo‘olelo (stories, legends, genealogies, place-based histories)
• Traditional practices (weaving, carving, lauhala, kapa, lei-making)
• Music & chants (mele, oli)

Community Connection & Giving Back

• Visits and service days with kupuna, farms, lo‘i, fishponds, cultural sites
• Hosting community resource days (sharing knowledge, exchange, makeke)
• Practicing mālama ‘ohana
• Building collaborative projects cooking classes with local restaurants.
• Visiting restoration sites and learning about the history of its place.
