Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Addiction
What Do We Know?
Studies show that those who have experienced four or more adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are more likely to develop substance-related disorders. ACEs typically fall under three categories: abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction.
Some examples of ACEs are:
- Parental separation or divorce
- Substance use or mental health problems in the household
- Incarceration of a parent or close family member
- Neglect from caretakers
- Physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse
- Suicide or attempted suicide by a family member
- Intimate partner violence or abuse of a caretaker
